This is a pictorial tapestry carpet adapted from Albrecht Dürer’s 1514 engraving Melencolia I, one of the most studied images in Western art. A brooding winged figure rests her head on her hand, surrounded by the tools of geometry, craft, and measurement — a ladder, a set of scales, an hourglass, a bell, a polyhedron, and a sphere. A putto sits on a millstone beside her, a sleeping hound curls at her feet, and a comet crosses the sky behind a rainbow. The composition is built from bold, flat colour-block planes outlined in heavy contour lines, with a carved, embossed relief finish that lifts the pattern outlines from the field for genuine sculptural depth. Crafted in India using 100% natural wool, the hand-tufted, hand-carved pile gives this design a gallery-piece presence on the wall or floor.
