Good To Know

Rugs are more than just beautiful decorations; they’re also hardworking parts of our homes. With all the foot traffic they endure, they can wear down over time. But, with the right care, your rugs can stay looking fresh and new for many years. While different types of fibers might need specific cleaning methods, there are some universal tips that can help keep any rug in great shape.

Color

Handmade rugs can sometimes have slight color variations due to different dye lots. So, the color of your rug might look a little different from the sample.

Creasing

When a new rug arrives, it might have some creases from being folded during shipping. Don’t worry, these will disappear once the rug is laid flat for a while. Rolling the rug with the pile facing outwards and leaving it like that overnight can help speed up the process.

Odor

Rugs shipped in sealed bags might have a bit of an odor from the dyes and fibers. This smell will fade away naturally after you take the rug out of the bag and let it air out.

Wear & Fading

Over time, rugs can show signs of wear and may fade if exposed to direct sunlight. To keep your rug looking its best, rotate it every six months to even out the wear.

Shedding & Sprouts

New rugs often shed loose fibers as they settle in. This will stop after a few vacuuming sessions. Some rugs shed more than others. You might also notice some longer fibers, or “sprouts,” sticking up. You can simply trim these with scissors to even out the surface.

Rug Storage:

To keep your rug in great shape when not in use, store it properly. Clean and dry the rug thoroughly, then roll it up and store it in a cool, dry, dark place. If possible, use a climate-controlled space to prevent damage from temperature and humidity changes.

Rug Storage Tips

Wrap it up: If you can, wrap your rugs in plastic or fabric before storing them. This helps protect them from dust and moisture.

Roll, don’t fold: Always roll your rug with the front side out. Folding can cause creases and damage. Wrap it in a cloth for extra protection.

Choose the right spot: Store your rugs in a dry, well-ventilated area. Clean the storage space regularly to keep insects away.

  • Light load only: Avoid placing heavy objects on top of your stored rugs to prevent damage.

Unpacking:

When you receive your rug, it might have a slight odor from being packed up. Unroll it and let it air out. Lay it flat or roll it with the pile facing outwards, and any wrinkles should disappear in a few days.

Rug Pad / Protectors:

Rugs can shift or bunch up when walked on. A rug pad can help by providing extra grip and protection. It also extends the life of your rug and adds comfort.

  • Protect from heavy furniture: Use rug protectors under the legs of heavy furniture to avoid flattening the rug’s pile.
  • Add a rug pad: Place a rug pad beneath your rug. It acts as a barrier between the rug and the floor, providing extra padding, sound insulation, and protection against wear and tear.
