Crafting a carpet involves an intricate process of 18 meticulous steps. When each step is carefully handcrafted, it can take up to a month for the carpet to achieve its flawless radiance.
Carpets, being handmade, can vary slightly in size. Each one is carefully measured to ensure it meets the standard dimensions required. This ensures they fit perfectly in their intended spaces.
Imagine counting every single stitch in a piece of fabric. That’s what happens with carpets! Skilled artisans meticulously count each knot to make sure the design is complete and perfect. If any knot is missing, they skillfully add it back to maintain the pattern’s integrity.
The “pile” of a carpet refers to its fluffy thickness. Checking this ensures that the yarn used is optimized without waste. Quality supervisors work closely with weavers to ensure every carpet meets the desired thickness and quality standards.
Sometimes, despite careful craftsmanship, a carpet may need a touch-up. Skilled artisans, almost like doctors for rugs, delicately repair any issues with knot counts or uneven pile heights. Their careful needlework ensures the carpet looks flawless once repaired.
After the intricate process of hand-knotting, craftsmen gently tap and adjust the knots to align them perfectly. This ensures the design appears crisp and clear, despite the natural variations that come from handmade artistry.
Post-weaving, the carpet undergoes its first shearing. This evens out the pile height across the entire surface, giving it a uniform look and soft feel.
Sometimes, yarns can intermix during weaving, blurring the design. Artisans carefully untangle and refine each line of the pattern using a special tool. This meticulous process ensures the design’s clarity and definition.
To enhance durability, the back of the carpet is lightly singed with a flame. This tightens the knots and removes any loose fibers, ensuring the carpet lasts longer without altering its appearance.
After singeing, any residual particles are gently brushed away to reveal a clean and smooth back surface, ready for use.
Carpets undergo a thorough cleansing dip to remove any impurities acquired during production. This process ensures they are clean and fresh before reaching their new homes.
Washing a carpet isn’t just about cleaning; it’s a careful bath and grooming session. Using a unique paddle, artisans methodically wash away dirt while preserving the strength of the underlying knots. This gentle yet effective technique uses minimal water and takes only 15 minutes!
After washing, yarn and cotton can shrink slightly. To ensure the carpet retains its intended size and shape, it is stretched on a precise iron frame. This step also tightens the knots evenly across the carpet’s surface.
Once off the loom, artisans trim and bind the edges of the carpet with precision. This not only enhances durability but also allows for various decorative binding styles along the edges.
The edges of the carpet are skillfully bound to give it a neat and finished look. Traditional designs may feature tassels, while modern styles use sleek binding techniques on all sides for durability and style.
In the last shearing phase, the carpet’s pile height is finely adjusted using a shearing machine. This ensures the carpet achieves its intended texture and appearance before being categorized for sale.
Artisans meticulously refine the carpet’s design by separating interlocked yarns with a fine needle. This intricate process enhances the clarity and sharpness of the design, ensuring every detail stands out beautifully.
Every strand counts! Artisans carefully inspect and snip away any visible cotton strands from the carpet’s surface. This attention to detail ensures a flawless finish that meets the highest standards of craftsmanship.
Carving: Carving is a technique where artisans carefully cut into the carpet’s surface to create intricate patterns and designs. By selectively removing fibers from the pile, they enhance the visual depth and contrast of the carpet, adding a sculptural quality to its appearance.
Embossing: Embossing involves raising certain areas of the carpet’s surface to create a three-dimensional effect. Artisans press down on specific parts of the pile, highlighting patterns or motifs and giving the carpet a textured and tactile quality. This technique adds richness and visual interest to the design, making it stand out beautifully.
